Don't you wanna take him? - make him all your own?

Ruki, vocalist of the Japanese band The GazettE
This is a commission for the kind Rincor ([link]), who was one of the people sweet enough to follow up on my whole “please help a poor student going to Japan”-desperate-money plead
My scanner really killed the shades in this – the shade under his eye and on his forehead, and above his eye and his nose (mostly just all shades), are a lot more smooth and subtle in real life, but of course my scanner would not show that here There are so many small details in the hair and his eyes that you cannot see in this.
OBS: This is NOT edited in some photo-software program. This is a pure scan of the original drawing -it's only worsened by my stupid scanner- and it’s completely touch-free. I really hate when people automatically assume I've used Photoshop (or a similar program) to edit the details and contrast of my drawings. Just a little notion before anyone asks.

How do you get the shading and blending of the different tones so smooth? Please answer, it really bothers me that I can't find a proper technique and I feel like my work would be a lot better if I could just figure out how to shade better.
